The facts about horny goat weed

Horny goat weed is a genus of about 60 or more species of herbaceous flowering plants in the family Berberidaceae. The large majority are endemic to southern China, with further outposts in Europe, and central, southern and eastern Asia. Also known as a Epimedium, Barrenwort, Bishop’s Hat, Fairy Wings, or Yin Yang Huo.

Epimedium species are hardy perennials. The majority have four-petaled flowers in spring. Many are believed to be aphrodisiacs.

What is this horny goat weed thingy?

Althought, this ancient medicine has a rather funny name it stands for a time-tested aphrodisiac that increases libido in men and women, and improves erectile function in men. Horny goat weed was first described in ancient classical Chinese medicinal texts. According to legend, this property was discovered by a Chinese goat herder who noticed sexual activity in his flock after they ate the weed. Today, horny goat weed holds an important place in Traditional Chinese Medicine and is gaining popularity around the world. Also there are numerous selling items which has this weed as an “active ingredient”.

Used by practitioners for over 2,000 years, horny goat weed is several species of epimedium, a leafy plant which grows in the wild, most abundantly at higher altitudes. The leaves of the plant contain a variety of flavonoids, polysaccharides, sterols and an alkaloid called magnaflorine. And while the exact way that horny goat weed works remains unknown, the plant has long been employed to restore sexual fire, boost erectile function, allay fatigue and alleviate menopausal discomfort.

The “active ingredient” in Epimedium is icariin, which can be found in standardized extracts from 5% up to 60% potent. Strengths above that are usually reserved for lab use.

Icariin is purported to work by increasing levels of nitric oxide, which relax smooth muscle. It has been demonstrated to relax rabbit penile tissue by nitric oxide and PDE-5 activity. Other research has demonstrated that injections of Epimedium extract, directly into the penis of the rat results in an increase in penile blood pressure.

There are multiple products on the market out to day having horny goat weed as an aphrodisiac. It is sold as a health supplement, usually in raw herb or pill form and sometimes blended with other supplements. Viagra has also the same active compound (PDE-5) which can be found in icariin. But horny goat weed has this ingridient much more.
